Pandem-pokalipse, Gili Trawangan, Lombok

There is a lot of evidence of a giant boom before the pandemic. There are probably more than a hundred abandoned building sites. It took us a while to notice, since we had a good position near the harbor on the beach. That area was decently busy. But as soon as we went around the island, signs of trouble appeared. And once we went inland, the devastation became more apparent.

Closed!

Closed!

Even the magic mushroom place is closed! Now that need to send some alarms! :D

Snorkling boats mostly unused

But! There are some signs of tourism comming back.

And the reason why I came to Indonesia? (to make Bamboo architecture)  What happens to me getting work here in this situation? Well. The place on a photo was charging 3x the price and was full of tourists. Proving my point: design brings money! Even in the worst of times, even with prices that challenge those of Europe: this place was still occupied. There is always work if you are very good. Am I good enough? Well, it is a challenge.

Not every bamboo building was doing well though. This one was too far from the center, and design is not as good, in my humble oppinion: The roof is too flat!

So: what did I do? I photoshoped it to look better. The world needs more curves!

What does this all mean for my plan in Indonesia to do architecture? It gives me time to prepare, that is what. Life here is cheap enough for me to be financially independent from the rent. I will spend a year or two just drawing made up proposals of bamboo architecture, the kind with proper curves!
